The Humpback Whales begin to arrive to Ecuadorian coasts at the end of June and stay until October.

The arrival of the whales is an event that one can appreciate in most parts of the Ecuadorian coast, but one of the best spots to live the experience is in Puerto López, a small fishing village to the south of the province of Manabí. In order to see the whales one must go out to sea for about an hour. With a good eye and patience, one will see the flippers and air from the blowholes between the waves. Bit by bit they begin to jump and the rest is a spectacular that can go on for various minutes.

The Humpback Whales begin their long journey from the Antartic and then to our coasts, where they water temperature is warmer. Once here, these animales of more than 15 meters in length begin to jump above the surface to call attention to their mate. This mating ceremony continues for weeks and reaches its climax a year later with the birth of a baby whale, also in Ecuadorian waters!

They are all happy, and to say the least, it is whale season and no one sould miss this spectacle. Giant mammals emerge from the depths, as if they are weightless...and in a beautiful and impressive dance, they flirt with eachother in order to lead to mating and the beautiful event of birth.

The trip does not end here. Further into the tour one arrives at Isla de la Plata, a place full of legendary stories of pirates, and now is the nesting site of many sea birds. Isla de la Plata is known as "the little Galapagos" since one can find varios species that also live in The Galagagos Islands. Frigates, albatros, nazca booby, blue footed and red footed boobies, cormorants, etc, rest and feed their chicks without fear of human presence. One can travel a large part of the island through paths and with the aid of a nature guide and learn about the habitats and characteristics of the area. The trip finishes with a bit of snorkeling, and later if one is lucky, more whales can be seen.

The "Isla de la Plata" is part of the Machalilla National Park, famous for evidence of thousand year old pre-colombian cultures.
